Learn to Square Dance

Modern Square Dancing is not like the square dancing you experienced in school! Today's callers use modern, upbeat music of all kinds (as well as traditional country) and vary the calls so there is little repetition. The callers also keep everybody moving so the dancing becomes great exercise. In New Jersey and surrounding states there are dances almost every evening within driving distance, and the cost is usually $4 to $6 per person, allowing square dancing to fit into any budget.

Reasons to square dance

It's great physical exercise. At a single dance you can WALK aerobically up to 3 miles, rain or shine.
It's great mental exercise. In Modern Square Dancing you never know what the caller will call next and you have to be alert and able to react quickly.
It's social. During a dance you're randomly mixed in squares with 3 other couples of all ages and backgrounds so you meet many friends very quickly.
You forget troubles. The upbeat music and the constant action of dancing push everything else out of your mind. And you can whoop and holler!
It's relatively inexpensive. For the cost of a single movie ticket, two can usually dance any day of the week.

Where to Square Dance

Whether you are new to square dancing or whether you want to add to your skills there are dances for you. If you are new, look in the list below for ABC or Open House dances in your area. You are always welcome at these dances and all the dances will be taught. Then if you would like to continue dancing ask the people at these dances where there will be other dances you can go to to increase your knowledge.

If you already dance the Basic or Mainstream square dance programs but have been out of square dancing for a few years you might also look at the programs below to determine where you can brush up your skills. If you already dance the Mainstream program and wish to move into the Plus program there are also opportunities listed.
